The 2012 men’s cross country squad returns five of the top seven runners from the 2011 season. The team’s top returners are Bryan Marsh ’13 (left side photo) and Skyler Cummins ’13 (right side photo). Marsh is a two-time all-regional honoree, a two-time national qualifier, and earned All-America honors in cross country during the 2011 season. Marsh was dealing with an injury for much of the track season, but still ran 4:02.85 for the 1500m and 14:57.91 for the 5k. Cummins is a two-time all-regional honoree who finished fourth in last season’s NESCAC Cross Country Championship. On the track this past spring, he ran 3:59.61 for the 1500m and 8:35.15 for the 3k, and finished third in the 5k at the NESCAC outdoor track championships. Fellow senior Austin Cotant ’13, who was the team’s number three runner for much of last season, will look for his first all-region honor this year after finishing 48th in 2011. A middle-distance specialist, Cotant finished the track season with PRs of 3:57.00 in the 1500m and 4:15.14 in the mile. Sam Roth ’13 (1:57.96, 800m/4:01.12, 1500m) and Filmon Tekeste ’15 (16:01.67, 5k/33:01.67, 10k), both varsity performers in 2011, return for the 2012 campaign. A talented group of incoming first-years will add depth to the team.
After competing against their alums to get their feet wet on Sat., Sept. 8, the men start the regular-season schedule Sat., Sept. 22 with the annual Wesleyan Invitational. The squad has a new event on the slate in 2012 with a trip to Lehigh for the Paul Short Invitational on the schedule Fri., Sept. 28. As always, the Cardinals will be concentrating on the Little Three meet Oct. 13, the NESCAC Championship Sat., Oct. 27 and the New England Div. III meet Sat., Nov. 10, through which the team and individuals qualify for the NCAAs, as the crux of the campaign.
