Led by the one-two-three punch of Skyler Cummins '13 (far left in photo), Bryan Marsh '13 (next to Cummins) and Filmon Tekeste '15 (right side of photo) during the 10k event, Wesleyan gathered 60 team points to finish sixth of 15 teams during the annual Jerry Gravel Classic at Westfield St. Sat., March 24, the team's opening spring event. Wesleyan picked up 24 of its 60 points from the 10k alone. The three finished in a span of less than one second as Cummins came through in 33:13.53, Marsh in 33:13.73 and Tekeste in 33:13.96.
Other top placers for the Cardinals included LaDarius Drew '15, who covered 200m in :22.48 to take second, and Alex Iwamoto '12, who came in second in the triple jump with a 44-10 1/4 leap. Drew also finished third in the 400m (:50.85). Paulie Lowther '13 had a pair of scoring efforts with a fifth-place performance in the 100m (:11.43) and eighth place in the 200m (:23.24). Wesleyan was back in action Sat., March 31, traveling to Coast Guard for its invitational. There just Drew in the 400 (2nd, :50.53) and Nayan Ghosh '15 in the pole vault (4th, 11-9 1/4) picked up team points as the Cardinals left a good portion of the team behind due to foul weather conditions. As a result, Wesleyan placed ninth of the nine teams in attendance.
The Cardinals will look for better representation during the unscored Elmer Swanson Invitational at home Sat., April 7.
