Return of Eight Starters Combined with Eight Newcomers to Give Cardinals Realistic Shot at Top-16 Finish in 2011-12 as Team Starts 3-2

With eight starters back from a 14-12 squad in 2010-11, including #1 and second-team all-NESCAC choice Mary Foster '14, Wesleyan is setting its sights on a top-16 finish nationally after securing the #19 spot a year ago.  The Cardinals are ranked #19 in the 2011-12 preseason CSA rankings.

Team co-captains Grace Zimmerman '13 (main photo), who went 11-14 from the #3 spot, and Meherazade Sumariwalla '12 (photo insert upper right), who tied for the team lead in victories with 16 as she posted a 16-9 mark at #9, will lead the squad in quest of its goal.  Also with 16 wins a year ago was #5 Danielle Craig '13 (16-10).  Foster was 12-13 from the top spot on the ladder, followed by Diana Edwards '14 with a 15-11 posting.  At #4, Tanesha Jackson '13 fashioned a 15-9 mark.  Nell Schwed '14 occupied the #6 spot with a 12-13 record while Kar-Anne Tan '14 handled the #8 slot with a 15-11 mark.  Also back having seen action in 2010-11 are Rosa Hayes '14 and Kerry Klemmer '13.

The team welcomes eight newcomers, including six freshmen as the mixture of veteran talent with some promising new faces will make the Cardinals deeper than in past years.

Wesleyan got the year underway with five matches over the weekend of Sat. and Sun., Nov. 19 and 20 during the Boston Round Robin.  Three of the opponents were NESCAC rivals while two were local Bostonians.  Bates, ranked #11, was the toughest of the foes while Bowdoin is #20.  Both were slated on Saturday along with Northeastern.  Sunday featured Conn. College and Wellesley.

The Cardinals defeated Northeastern, Conn and Wellesley in 9-0 sweeps but fell to Bates, 7-2, and Bowdoin, 5-4.  Both Foster and Craig finished the weekend with team-best 4-1 marks.  Tan went undefeated with a 3-0 mark including victories over both her Bates and Bowdoin rivals.

The Cardinals will return to match mode Fri., Dec. 2, the opening day of the three-day Wesleyan Round Robin.  Opponents on Friday are Tufts and Colby.  On Saturday, Colgate and Brown provide the competition.  Sunday's adversaries will be William Smith and Smith.  For the complete Wesleyan Round Robin schedule, please click < here >.
