Taking on Bard in the first round of the Inn at Middletown Tip-Off Tournament Fri., Nov. 18, Wesleyan opened up an 8-1 lead after 4:20 of play and extended the margin to 27-10 at the 10:10 mark of the opening half. Derick Beresford '13 collected seven points while junior Shasha Brown '13 (#11, left side photo) had six. The lead grew as large as 29 (44-15, 4:00 to go) in the first period but was trimmed to 25 at intermission, 49-24. Wesleyan pushed the difference above 30 at 66-35 eight minutes into the second half and flirted with a 40-point differential at 79-40 with 4:50 left. But Bard narrowed the gap to 29 at 82-53 in the closing moments before Wesleyan scored the final four points for the 33-point victory, 86-53.
Wesleyan is now 3-0 all-time vs. Bard. Brown paced the Cardinals with 17 points in 23 minutes of action. Jason Mendell '12 added 11 and Julian Harris '14 (#33, right side photo) chipped in with 10 for Wesleyan. Wesleyan enjoyed a 40-19 edge on the boards but no Cardinal had more than six rebounds with Glen Thomas '14 taking game honors.
Wesleyan will face Curry for the first time in program history in the tournament finals Sat., Nov. 19. Curry pulled away from a 35-35 deadlock at halftime to subdue Johnson St., 81-73, in the other first-round matchup.
