Rolling to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at third singles and joining fellow frosh Stephen Monk '15 for a commanding 8-0 victory at second doubles, Ben Hudson '15 (photo) picked up two impressive triumphs to lead Wesleyan past Holy Cross Sat., Oct. 1, 8-1. Next on the slate was a rematch with Roger Williams Sun., Oct. 2 to complete the home weekend series. Last year, Roger Williams defeated the Cardinals, 5-4, in Rhode Island. This time, the Cardinals dismantled the Hawks, 9-0, yielding just one set on the afternoon.
Against Holy Cross, the Cardinals opened with a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles affairs as Jeff Legunn '13 and Donald Kleckner '13 combined for an 8-5 win at #1 while Robert Troyer '12 and Michael Glen '13 were busy staging an 8-2 win at third doubles. Wesleyan then collected five straight-set wins in singles play as Legunn at #1, Donovan Suh '15 at #4, Alex Hirsch '13 at #5 and Charlie Seifer '15 at #6 all subdues their Crusader rival. Hirsch was equally impressive as Hudson with his 6-1, 6-0 win while Legunn was not far behind, taking a 6-0, 6-2 decision.
While some of the singles matches with Roger Williams were a bit tighter with three sets going to tie-breakers, Legunn, Monk and Suh dropped a total of eight games between them in sweeping their Hawk adversaries. Once again, Monk and Hudson were most effective at #2 doubles with an 8-1 win. Legunn and Kleckner won 8-4 while the tandem of Jonathan Coombs '15 and Alex Rachlin '15 combined for an 8-4 triumph at #3. Hudson, Hirsch and Seifer were all close winners as well.
With a 4-1 record thus far, the Cardinals wrap up their fall campaign Thurs., Oct. 6 by hosting Salve Regina.
