Cardinal Womens' Crew Looking to Combine Senior Leadership & Young Talent into Fast Times
Women’s crew looks to build on the strong results of its second and third boats from 2010-11 to gain greater top end speed in its varsity crew for 2011-12. “We want all of our crews going fast, not just one or two crews," said third-year Head Coach Pat Tynan. "We’ve got a fantastic group returning led by senior captain Greer Dent '12. Greer is coming off a summer of competitive racing so she’s really hitting the ground running. She will also have the support of the rest of the senior class to help to set the right examples for the younger women.
"Becky Gillig ’12, Yara Cass-Gergi ’12, Erin Kelly ’12, Alexa Atamanchuck ’12 and Emma Overton ’12 will provide the senior leadership necessary for a successful team. There is also a strong group of freshmen who will, no doubt, put some pressure on upperclassmen and find themselves in the top crews. We have good depth right now and had a number of freshmen (Megan Nash ’14, Kayla Cloud ’14, Isabelle Gauthier ’14 and Clare Doyle ’14) rowing in our varsity crew last spring. They handled that pressure very well last year and will go into their sophomore year with some great racing experience."
The team will inaugurate fall fall racing at the Textile River Regatta in Lowel, Mass. October 2 while also competing in the Head of the Connecticut, the Head of the Charles and the Head of the Fish Regatta during the month of October. There is no easing into the racing schedule as the Cardinals will see strong competition right off the bat including Wellesley, Trinity and Williams. “We want to be the best and we’re going to do what it takes to get that done," said Tynan. “The team is building the culture needed to go fast. We’re reinforcing good decisions and effort. We focus on the kinds of behavior we want more of.”
