After knocking off Coast Guard, 6-3, to inaugurate the fall season, the Cardinals improved their record to 2-0 with a weekend sweep of non-conference foes, defeating visiting Nichols, 7-2, while breaking in their newly surfaced US Open-like courts Sun., Sept. 11.
Wesleyan made short work of doubles play as Ben Hudson '15 and Stephen Monk '15 (left-side photo) won 8-2 at #1 while Donald Kleckner '13 and Charlie Seifer '15 posted an 8-4 win at #2. Jeff Legunn '13 (right-side photo) and Zach Mintz '15 rolled to an 8-1 decision at #3. Legunn and Monk then went on to make it a two-win day as each posted a straight-set win in singles, Legunn at #1 and Monk at #5. Legunn took the first set 6-1, and was ahead 2-1 when his rival was forced to retire due to an injury. Monk didn't lose a game in his two-set triumph. Also victorious in singles were Donovan Suh '15 at #4 and Alex Hirsch '13 at #6.
The Cardinals were on the road for their next match, taking on their only NESCAC opponent of the fall when they ventured to Williams Sat., Sept. 17. Williams posted an 8-1 victory as Monk, playing at #3 singles due to the absence of Mintz and Hudson, was the lone Wesleyan winner with a hard-fought 7-6, 7-5 triumph.
Wesleyan sent three athletes to complete in the annual ITA regional tournament Fri.-Sun., Sept. 23-25 at Williams. There Legunn dropped his first-round match while Monk went 1-1 in singles and paired with Hudson in doubles. They dropped their opening match.
Up next is a dual match against Holy Cross at home Sat., Oct. 1.
