Wesleyan Establishes New Presentation of Jones Awards for Women's Athletics in the Freeman Athletic Center (includes link to photo album of event!)
On Saturday, May 21, 2011, during Wesleyan's Reunion/Commencement Weekend activities, a new permanent presentation of the college's Jones Awards, given annually to the outstanding competitor on each of Wesleyan's 14 women's teams, was dedicated.
David Jones '51, who established the awards in 1979 in memory of his mother, Elizabeth Post Jones, and in honor of his wife, Ann Jennings Jones, gave a short speech following an introduction by Paul DiSanto '81, Director of Leadership Giving for Wesleyan's University Relations. Mr. Jones quickly turned the talking over to his daughter, Lisa Jones '86, who was the recepient of the Jones Award for squash in 1985-86.
A majority of the 2010-11 Jones Award winners were present for the ceremony as well as a host of previous award winners to help mark the occasion. Names of winners are now scribed in black on heavy plate glass with a protective plate of glass over top.
The winners of the Jones Awards for 2010-11 include: Hilary Nabhan '11 (field hockey), Laura Kurash '13 (soccer), Ruby Hernandez '11 (volleyball), McKinley Tennant '11 (basketball), Ashleigh Corvi '13 (ice hockey), Jenny Chu '11 (squash), Cara Madden '11 (swimming & diving), Becca Schofield '11 (crew), Claire Hunter '11 (lacrosse), Talia Bernstein '11 (softball) and Linda McDougal '11 & Grace Smith '14 (tennis). Awards were not presented in cross country, indoor track or track & field.
In the photo below are Jones Award winners, past and present, as well as David P. Jones; his wife Ann; his son, David; and his daughter, Lisa.
