At the Head of the Housatonic in Shelton, Conn. Sat., Oct. 9, the second of the fall head races for Wesleyan, the Cardinals varsity eight had a great race to win the collegiate eight division. The top Wesleyan entry placed first of 11 crews, finishing ahead of traditional rivals Williams (5.2 seconds) and Coast Guard (almost 24 seconds) over the 2.7 mile course. Wesleyan's winning time was 15:23.1. The team was sixth in this event last fall, and the improvement was clear. Four athletes from the top crew raced twice, garnering a second place finish in the collegiate fours race behind only top finisher, UMass-Amherst. Wesleyan's varsity crew at the Housatonic was cox Peter Chu ’14, stroke Elliott Skopin ’11, Trevor Michelson ’13, Bryce Hollingsworth ’13, Terrence Word ’11, Gilder Keeler ’11, Spencer Hattendorf ’12, Nick Bender ’14 and Mike Massone ’14. Wesleyan also had the fifth- place finisher in the collegiate eight race.
A week earlier in Lowell, Mass., Sat., Oct. 3, at the Textile River Regatta, the Cardinals opened the year with another outstanding effort in the open eight division, placing third of 13 entries. Trailing only two club entrants, Wesleyan was tops among the 11 collegiate crews in the race including traditional rivals New Hampshire and WPI as well as URI, Middlebury and Bowdoin. Wesleyan's time over the approximately 3.5-mile course was 19:03.7. Wesleyan's boat was composed of three seniors, a juniors, two sophomores and three freshmen. The top boat featured cox Peter Chu '14, stroke Elliott Skopin '11, Trevor Michelson '13, Bryce Hollingsworth '13, Terrence Word '11, Gilder Keeler '11, Spencer Hattendorf '12, Peter Martin '14 and Nick Bender '14.
Next up for the squad is the presitigous Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, where the Wesleyan men will be represented in the collegiate fours race on Sat., Oct. 23.
