INFLUX OF FIVE TALENTED NEWCOMERS TO BOLSTER WOMEN'S TENNIS SIGNIFICANTLY IN 2010-11

The women's tennis squad will welcome a bumper crop of newcomers, virtually all of whom will factor into the starting lineup right from the get-go, as the 2010-11 season unfolds. The Cardinals inaugurate the fall segment, which features five dual matches and the ITA Tournament, by hosting Simmons Sat., Sept. 11.

Wesleyan returns six players from last year's fine 10-7 squad that opened the year with a school-record 8-0 mark before finishing 2-7 vs. NESCAC rivals. Four NESCAC teams qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship, won by Williams with Amherst securing a third-place finish. Sarah Miller '12 held down the #2 singles slot last year, going 8-6 while also coming away with a 7-7 mark at #1 doubles. Miller will be studying abroad during the fall but will be a welcome sight when the spring rolls around. Wesleyan will play more than a dozen matches starting in March when the team travels to Florida for a number of contests during the mid-semester break. Others back who saw regular action in 2009-10 include #3 Genevieve Aniello '13 (10-6) and team captain #5 Linda McDougal '11 (8-7, photo) while Hannah Berkman '12, who'll be abroad during the fall, Ana Alvarado '12 and Taylor Morales '13 all played at least two varsity singles matches a year ago and collectively posted a 9-1 record.

Joining the ranks this year will be Kiley Robbins '14, Liza Fletcher '14, Grace Smith '14, Nicki Softness '14 and Kaitlyn Clark '14.  Each of these players is expected to contribute to the team's fortunes right away with a couple of them likely to occupy spots in the top half of the ladder.
