Wesleyan Finishes Florida Trip with a 4-2 Record After Splitting a Pair of Matches on the Final Day
Closing out its venture to Orlando, Fla., with matches against Michigan Tech and St. Francis (IL) on Thurs., March 13, the Cardinals dropped a 5-4 decision to Michigan Tech while blowing past St. Francis, 9-0. The squad ended its trip with a record of 4-2.
Using 12 players against Michigan Tech and only one regular in the singles lineup, Wesleyan still made it competitive against its Division I opponent. Robert Troyer '12 at #2, Matt Schaff '11 at #3 and Matt Buckley '12 at #6 came through with wins while the doubles tandem of Graham Immerman '09 and Michael Piderit '12, the team's usual #2 doubles pair, came up with a win.
With the normal starting lineup intact against St. Francis, Wesleyan had little trouble securing the victory as only Immerman at #2 was extended to a third set.
Over the course of the excursion, #1 Matt O'Connell '09 (right side of photo), Immerman (upper left in photo) and Piderit (lower left in photo) all went 3-1 in singles play and 4-1 in doubles to lead the team.
Wesleyan had two weeks of practice before resuming competition with a visit from NESCAC rival Tufts Sat., March 28. The Jumbos defeated the Cardinals, 7-2. Winners for Wesleyan were O'Connell in straight sets at #1 singles and the #3 doubles tandem of Paul Gerdes '09 and Alejandro Alvarado '09.
Wesleyan is right back on the courts Sun., March 29 in another NESCAC match, this time vs. Colby.
