Matt O'Connell '09 to Lead the Way as Men's Tennis Embarks Upon the 2008-09 Season


Handling duties at both number-one singles and doubles last season, team captain Matt O'Connell '09 (photo) will lead the way for the 2008-09 men's tennis season. Wesleyan posted a very competitive 8-8 mark a year ago and O'Connell also went .500 at number-one singles while combining with three other returnees, Matt Schaff '11, Jafaar Rizvi '09 and Graham Immerman '09, for a 5-11 total mark at number-one doubles. Also returning with loads of varsity playing time is Paul Gerdes '09, who held down the number-three singles spot while also playing some doubles, and Alejandro Alvarado '09, also active in both singles and doubles. These six players represent to core of the Cardinals' lineup for the upcoming fall while a number of new faces also will bolster the troops. Among them, Depauw transfer Alec Dinnin '11 and Matt Buckley '12 appear the likeliest to move into a starting position. The squad gets the fall off an running Tues., Sept. 9 when Wesleyan hosts NESCAC powerhouse Williams.
