Cardinals Nail Down Opening NESCAC Win of Season at Hamilton, Then Add Second at Conn.


After facing a steady diet of top-flight NESCAC opponents since returning from Florida in mid-March, the Cardinals once again tasted victory with a 5-1 win at Hamilton Sun., April 13. The match was called once the team decision was determined to expedite Wesleyan's travel plans. Wesleyan captured two of the three doubles matches with Paul Gerdes '09 (photo) and Alejandro Alvarado '09 combining to win at #2 and Pauri Pandian '08 and Max Schenkein '08 taking the triumph at #3. When Gerdes and Schenkein both registered straight set wins at #3 and #6 singles, respectively, the match was over after the three-set victory by Matt O'Connell '09 at #1. With three matches left on the schedule, Wesleyan hosted Vassar Wed., April 16, falling 8-1. Graham Immerman '09 was victorious at #5 for the lone Cardinal point. The team closed out its NESCAC schedule Thurs., April 17 with a trip to Conn. College. After falling in all three doubles matches, the Cards came back to capture five of the six singles affairs to lock up a 5-4 triumph. In the close results, both #1 O'Connell and #6 Schenkein went to three sets in securing their wins. Gerdes at #3, Michael Frank '08 at #4 and Immerman at #5 all won in two sets. The team finishes the year by hosting Brandeis Tues., April 22.
