Extending Excitement of Record-Breaking Season A Major Goal for the 2008 Season

Men's Soccer 2008 Key Returnees

Returning 13 regulars, six of whom were starters, from the 10-5 record-setting squad of 2007, Wesleyan will be looking to extend the success of recent times into 2008. Over the last three seasons, the Cardinals have a combined record of 31-14-6. Last year's troops rattled off 10 straight victories which included five consecutive shutouts, both representing team standards. Team co-captains Alan Ashenfelter '09 (#12, left in photo) and Ozzie Parente '09 (#10, right in photo) will lead the squad that has the bulk of its offensive firepower back. Of the team's 22 goals in 2007, 20 were scored by players back for the 2008 campaign and one was an own goal by the opposition. Ashenfelter and Keisuke Yamashita '10 each tallied four goals while Parente was one of four with a pair of tallies along with Jory Kahan '10, Kyle Nuland '09 and Austin Woolridge '11. Matt Nevin '09, Mark Murphy '10 and Nick Whipple '10 also put one in the net. Other regulars back include Geoff Zartarian '11, Woody Redpath '10, Will Mithoefer '11 and Asante Brooks '10. Wesleyan will be concentrating on shoring up its very capable defense due to the graduation of staple figures Justin Mello '08, Ross Pemmerl '08 and Zach Schecter-Steinberg '08, who anchored the field defense, and both goalies, Jamie Hiteshew '08 and Matt Gnall '08. Hiteshew and Mello were both second-team all-NESCAC picks in 2007 along with Ashenfelter. The 2008 season gets off and running Tues., Sept. 9 when the Cardinals host W.N.E.C., a team that qualified for the NCAAs in 2007 despite a 2-1 loss to Wesleyan which began the Cardinals' 10-game win streak.
