Mike Callaghan '13 (#44, left side of photo) posted his second career double-double for Wesleyan with 17 points and 13 rebounds to pace the Cardinals to an 82-59 home victory over Salve Regina Mon., Jan. 25.
Wesleyan scored the opening seven points of the game and never trailed though Salve trimmed the lead to one on several occasions in the first half. Wesleyan led by as many as 12 in the first period (32-20) but settled for a 41-34 margin at intermission. The lead stayed in single digits for the first three minutes of the second half until Jeremy Kaminer '10 (#11, right side of photo) hit three three-pointers for Wesleyan in a span of 1:30 to make it a 55-42 game with 16:12 left. Kaminer also finished with 17 points for the Cardinals as he connected on five of seven shots from behind the arc. Wesleyan kept the lead in the teens for the next 14 minutes before the Cardinals netted the last eight points of the game in the closing 1:07 to push the final margin to 23.
The teams had met three weeks earlier in the consolation game of the Naismith Classic at Springfield Jan. 3 with Wesleyan winning, 88-71.
Wesleyan had five players in double-figures for points as Dave Fogel '13 added 14, Jason Mendell '12 contributed 11 and Shasha Brown '13 chipped in with 10 along with a game-high six assists.
Wesleyan hosts Tufts University in its next game Fri., Jan. 29 in a NESCAC battle. The squad wraps up the NESCAC weekend against Bates Sat., Jan. 30
