Holly M. Sorensen ’95
As Wesleyan’s only female national champion in the sport of swimming and diving, Holly Sorensen, who transferred to Wesleyan from the University of Indiana as a sophomore, proceeded to shatter team records from the get-go and still holds team records in the 200-yard, 500-yard, 1000-yard and 1650-yard freestyle as well as the 200-yard butterfly. In 1994, Holly was a two-event national champion, taking wins in both the 200-yard butterfly and the 500-yard freestyle. She was selected as the New England College Athletic Conference (NECAC) Division III Female Athlete of the Year for her accomplishments. When Wesleyan hosted the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in 1995, Holly repeated as titlist in the 500-yard free while placing second in the 200 fly.
A talented singer and part of an a cappella group at Wesleyan, Holly was asked to perform the National Anthem at the national championships in 1995. She has pursued music for her livelihood, initially singing opera on the West Coast before furthering her music education in the Boston area. Holly currently performs mainly in the Greenwich, Conn. area, where she resides, singing opera and classical pieces with symphonic and other groups. Her singing has taken her around the United States and abroad, including Venice, Italy.
In 2007, Holly was inducted into the Greenwich Aquatic Hall of Fame.
