After leading the NESCAC in punting with a 38.2-yard average, Chris Helsel '09 (#3, main photo by SteveMcLaughlinPhotography.com) has been selected first-team all-NESCAC following a vote of the conference coaches. This was Helsel's first season as the team's starting punter. He handled the team's placekicking chores for four seasons and was occasionally used as a wide receiver.
Helsel punter 46 times in 2008 with a long boot of 71 yards. He pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line 13 times. His 38.2-yard average was good enough to rank third among New England Division III punters and 42nd nationally in Division III.
As a placekicker, Helsel was a perfect 15-for-15 on extra points in 2008 and was 43-for-49 over his four years. He went 2-for-3 on field-goal attempts this season and is 11-for-19 over his career with a long of 35 yards.
As a receiver, Helsel had 10 catches for 81 yards and one TD this season and a four-year total of 20 receptions for 224 yards.
Defensive lineman Peter Sugarbaker '10 (#95, photo insert right side) was named to the all-NESCAC second-team. A two-year starter at defensive tackle, Sugarbaker collected 21 tackles in 2008, two of them behind the line of scrimmage. Over three years, Sugarbaker has been in on 58 stops, 9.5 of them for a loss with three sacks. He was a candidate for CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American in 2008.
