at Wesleyan 42, Bates 16

Sunday, October 13, 2001 at Middletown, Conn.

Notes: Sophomore QB Brennan Carney (South Burlington, Vt.) completed 16 of 29 passes for 300 yards and two TDs, while senior George Thompson (Virginia Beach, Va.) caught eight passes for 190 yards and both TDs to pace the Wesleyan receivers, and Young Douglas scored three TDs on short runs to power Wesleyan to a 42-16 victory over Bates.

Bates got 270 yards rushing and two TDs from junior Sean Atkins (New York, N.Y.), with 222 of that coming in the first half on 23 attempts. Atkins ran the ball 36 times on the day, but was held to 48 yards on 13 carries in the second half as Bates was held scoreless over the final 30 minutes. Atkins effort was the second highest rushing figure for an NCAA Division III player this season. Bates had 287 total yards in the opening half, trailing 28-16, but had just 97 yards in the second half. Wesleyan had 256 total yards in the first half and 175 in the second half for 431 in the game.

Douglas scored both of Wesleyan's first two TDs from the two-yard line following two pass interference penalties on Bates in the endzone. That sanwiched a 65-yard TD run from Atkins. Thompson scored the furst of his two TDs on a 17-yard reception after a 39-yard field goal by Bates' Nat Carr. Atkins 34-yard TD run made it 21-16, but Douglas finished off the half's scoring with a three-yard run.

A 17-yard TD run by senior fullback Larry Woolard (Middletown, Conn.) capped an 11-play, 86-yard drive in the third quarter and Thompson's 24-yard TD catch finished off an 11-play, 96-yard drive that used 5:29 of the fourth period.

The win improved Wesleyan's record to 3-1 this year and was the team's 15th consecutive victory over Bates, dating back to 1982. Bates is 0-4 on the year.
