'09 Cards Back Virtually Intact from a Year Ago with Hopes of Turning Around Many Close Defeats
In 2008, 15 Wesleyan players started three or more games during the field hockey season. In 2009, 13 of those 15 return to the field for an opportunity to turn last year's record around.
Team co-captains Alexa David '10 (#14, main photo) and Emily Wenzel '10 (#6, photo insert upper left), two of just three players to start all 14 games a year ago, will lead the Cardinals on the field as the squad looks to avenge six one-goal losses in 2008. Victories in those tight defeat would have turned a disappointing 3-11 mark into a prosperous 9-5 record.
Top scorer Lila Creighton '11 (4 goals, 1 assist, 9 points) joins David (2-1-5) and Allie Lynch '11 (1-3-5) as three of the team's high point getters last season. Lynch was the third Cardinal to start all 14 games in 2008. Also back after starting a majority of the squad's contests last season are Allie Singer '12, Claire O'Brien '12, Caitlin Kent '10, Jamie Thabault '11, Liz Gauvey-Kern '11, Morgan McCauley '12 and Hilary Nabhan '11, giving Wesleyan loads of experience in 2009. Alex Bean '11 and Liz Chabot '12 also played in just about every game in 2008, adding to the depth and veteran talent. Wesleyan also welcomes 10 new players to the squad, two of whom - Tori Redding '13 and Sarah Beattie '12 - will vie for the starting spot in goal.
