Alex Mautone '07 and Rob Coughlin '07

Alex Mautone '07 (main photo) went 2-for-4 and put Wesleyan ahead for good with an RBI double in the 3rd inning on his way to a three-RBI day as Wesleyan captured a NESCAC West win over Hamilton in Middletown Fri., April 13. Mautone added a two-run single in the 8th while Brice Kelly '10 also had three RBI for Wesleyan including a bases-loaded double in the 5th. Rob Coughlin '07 (photo insert lower right) joined Wesleyan's 100-hit club with his 4th-inning double. He is the 36th Cardinal to connect for 100 hits during his career. On the mound, Wesleyan got seven shutout innings from Louis Gabel '08 as he scattered four Hamilton hits in picking up the victory. Wesleyan and Hamilton closed out their three-game series in a double-header Sat., April 14 with Wesleyan taking the opener, 4-1, and Hamilton coming from behind to win the night cap, 7-5. In game one April 14, Chris Waelsch '08 knocked in Mautone with a fielder's choice to break a 1-1 tie in the 5th and Chris Arvanites '09 completed his three RBI game with a two-run double for a three-run inning. Kyle Lee '07 was in command on the mound, allowing five hits and no earned runs. In game two, Wesleyan carried a 5-2 lead into the 9th inning as Chris Graceffa '07 had a two-run double in the 5th and Dan Poniatowski '08 added a two-run single in the 8th to spark the offense. But the bottom dropped out in the top of the 9th as Hamilton took advantage of one hit, five walks, a hit batter and an error to score five times in gaining the split and avoiding a three-game sweep. Wesleyan will try to get a game in at home vs. Albertus Magnus Mon., April 16 if the weather cooperates. (photos courtesy of Wagner Photography, Ft. Myers, Fla.)
