Hadel Jarada

Hadel Jarada is a scholar specializing in Islamic intellectual traditions. Her work focuses on the history of Islamic philosophy and theology, particularly during the medieval period. She has investigated the interplay between developments in intellectual history and broader political and cultural contexts, including the rise of institutions of learning, major scholars, systems of patronage, and the dynastic and cultural forces that shaped key advancements in the Islamic rational sciences. Her research interests extend to the history of philosophy, addressing questions in metaphysics, the philosophy of action, logic, and epistemology. She holds a BA in Near Eastern Studies from the University of California at Berkeley (earning the Departmental Citation, the highest award given to a graduating student, and Highest Honors), and a PhD/AM from the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. From 2021 to 2022, she was a postdoctoral scholar at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, and from 2017-2021, she was a predoctoral scholar in the ERC-funded project, "Epistemic Transitions in Islamic Philosophy, Theology, and Science" at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland. At Wesleyan, she offers courses on a wide array of topics related to Islamic cultural and intellectual history.
