Gordana Herning
Gordana Herning received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and her Ph.D. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Princeton University. Her dissertation focused on reliability-based evaluation of seismic design and performance of steel self-centering moment resisting frames. Her research has investigated solutions for sustainable and resilient infrastructure, with a recent focus on mitigation, design, and adaptation strategies for climate change impacts on the built environment. Dr. Herning is a registered Professional Engineer in Colorado, and has taught at Princeton University, MIT, and Olin College of Engineering. Her courses have focused on structural analysis, design of steel structures, and project-based learning where engineering theory is applied in interdisciplinary design studies. In her teaching and research, Dr. Herning aspires to relate the principles of engineering with studies of design, society, nature, and art. Basic tenets in her work include combining analytical skills with creative inquiry, developing an intuition for theoretical models through hands-on activities, and conveying scientific principles as a language for analyzing practical problems.
