Laila Samy '18 Ends Regular Season Unbeaten, Claims Unofficial Individual Little 3 Title, 1st-Team All-NESCAC, NESCAC Rookie of the Year & All-American

Claiming 3-0 sweeps of both her Amherst and Williams rivals during the annual Little Three gathering, this year in Middletown Sun., Feb. 1, Laila Samy '18 extended her collegiate record at #1 to 18-0 without dropping a game as she secured an unofficial Little Three individual crown. Wesleyan, as a team, did not fare as well as the Cardinals lost to both Amherst and Williams by a 7-2 count. Up next for the team was the NESCAC Championship, hosted by Williams Fri.-Sun., Feb. 6-8. Wesleyan was the #9 seed and played a first-round match Friday against the #8 seed, Colby, falling 5-4. Wesleyan then blasted both Tufts, 8-1, and Conn. College, 9-0, Sat., Feb. 7 to finish on its seed with a 2-1 mark. Joining Samy with a victory against Amherst was #2 Lauren Nelson '15, who took an exciting 3-1 win after losing the first game. Two of her game victories were by a 13-11 and 11-9 score. Against Williams, #5 Claire Miller '15 won the first game, 11-8, before her opponent had to default. Miller had fallen to her Amherst foe by a tight 3-2 score, as did #3 Ashey Suan '18. Both suffered an 11-9 loss in game five, indicative of the tightness of the match. Three other Cardinal defeats vs. the Lord Jeffs came by 3-1 results.
