Covering the 8k course in a solid time of 25:01.41 during the New England Division III Championship hosted by Westfield St. Sat., Nov. 10, Bryan Marsh '13 (right side photo) placed seventh of 351 entrants to earn all-New England Division III honors for the third year on a row. A year ago, Marsh placed 11th regionally and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship for the second time. There he took 35th place to secure All-America honors. Both Marsh and Skyler Cummins '13 (left side photo), who took 10th place in the region with a time of 25:07.93 for all-N.E recognition, represented Wesleyan at Nationals as individual qualifiers. Marsh was just 10 seconds off the winning time in the region.
At the NCAAs in Terre Haute, Ind. Sat., Nov. 17, Marsh covered the 8k course in 24:50.4 to place 16th of 276 entrants. He was 24 seconds off the winning pace of Tim Nelson from Wisc.-Stout. The top 35 runners are deemed All-Americans, giving Marsh his second straight honor. Cummins was timed in 25:46.2, placing him 103rd in his first trip to Nationals. Bates was the top team finisher from New England, grabbing sixth. Tufts was right behind in seventh. Marsh was the fourth finisher from a New England college at the NCAAs.
More than half the NCAA field is determined by automatic qualifiers from each region with the top two teams and next seven individuals not on those teams making the NCAAs, accounting for 168 of the 280 runners. The remaining 16 teams are chosen at-large, making up the additional 112 runners. With Middlebury and Bowdoin gaining the team bids and owning the top three individual finishers in the race, individuals from spots four through 10 are assured of NCAA places. The NCAA committee went on to pick Bates, Tufts and Williams from the New England regional, making Marsh the third individual qualifier and Cummins the fifth choice.
Improving their placing in New England by three spots as a team from last year when Wesleyan took 10th of 48 teams in the regional meet, the Cardinals got support from Filmon Tekeste '15, Austin Cotant '13 and Sam Roth '13 to round out Wesleyan's scoring five. Tekeste took 69th while Cotant was 74th and Roth, 90th.
